Creeds & Confessions

The Christian faith has a long and beautiful history spanning multiple generations.  At Redeemer we strive to both honor and learn from the saints who lived before us.  To this end we adhere to the Apostles’ Creed and also affirm the tenets of the faith as expressed in the Heidelberg Catechism.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to hell.

The third day he arose again from the dead.

He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

The Heidelberg Catechism (1563)

Known for its personal warmth and practicality – The Heidelberg Catechism is considered the world over as one of the most beautiful of all catechisms of the Reformation.  For centuries the Heidelberg Catechism has been used for the instruction of the church, including her youth and her converts.   Written to be committed to memory – it is presented as a total of 129 Questions and Answers spanning 52 lessons (one lesson for each Lord’s Day of the year).  A short sample is presented here:

Lord’s Day 1

Q:             What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A:              That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.  He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and set me free from the tyranny of the devil.  He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven;           in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.  Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.
